    Description

Here's a pretty 'Hostess Helper' set (or that's what my reference calls it), consisting of a 12" ice bowl (for shrimp, I guess), and a sauce bowl in the center.  My reference states there were also three chrome clips which held little shot glass toothpick holders (I know they exist because I've had one other set like this maybe 10 years ago), but unfortunately I don't have those (they're pretty difficult to find).  The pattern name is Heisey's No. 1485 line, called 'Saturn', which was introduced in 1937 and continued in production until 1953.  My reference states some Saturn pieces continued to be produced until 1957 (when Heisey closed), but I don't know if this was one of them.  The ice bowl is Heisey's rare 'Zircon' color, which was only made for about three years in the late 1930's; it was revived in 1956 and renamed 'Limelight'.  There's no way I know of to tell the difference between Zircon and Limelight, and this could be either one since Saturn was made during both time periods.  The sauce bowl that sits in the ice bowl is clear; I don't know if Heisey marketed it this way, but I'm guessing they probably did.
The ice bowl is pretty much exactly 12" in diameter, and about 2-5/8" high at the sides.  There's a raised center (to hold the sauce bowl) that's about 4" in diameter, and the ground and polished base is about 4-1/2" in diameter.  It is not marked with the Heisey diamond (though the color and blank are unmistakeable).  It's in nice shape with no nicks, chips, fleabites, etc.; maybe a light scratch here and there, but nothing heavy.  The sauce bowl is about 4-7/8" across the top, about 3-3/8" high at the sides, and the foot is just under 3-1/4" in diameter (so it's not real snug in the center of the 4" ring in the ice bowl, but I don't think it was designed to be).  The sauce bowl is marked on the bottom with the Heisey diamond and is similarly in nice shape with no damage other than a light scuff or scratch somewhere that I can't see but is probably on there someplace.  I think there's a fair chance this is a one-owner set, because the lady who owned it died last year at age 101 and though she had a few Heisey pieces I don't think she was a 'collector'.
And that's about all I can tell you about this.  I asked the estate sale people to keep their eyes open for little chrome clips and shot glasses squirreled away anywhere, but I'm not real hopeful, so what you see is most likely what you get.  I've never had a Zircon piece before, so I'm kind of in love with it at the moment, but I'm overrun with glassware as it is, so this needs to find a different home.
